Welcome to the State Historic Preservation Office

The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) encourages and facilitates the responsible stewardship of South Carolina's irreplaceable historic and prehistoric places. 

The SHPO was established in 1969 to implement the goals of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which extended federal support to state and local preservation efforts. The SHPO, which receives federal funds through the National Park Service, is a program of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

** As a temporary measure during the current COVID-19 situation, the SHPO is accepting Review & Compliance project
    review submittals and Homeowner Tax Credit application submittals via email. **

   To submit Review & Compliance projects send an email to the SHPO Project Review staff member for the appropriate agency.

   To submit Homeowner S1, S2, S2 Amendment, and/or S3 applications send an email to Pam Kendrick with your tax credit 
   application, photos, and plans/specifications for review. 

   Ask for and we will provide an emailed acknowledgement that a project submittal email was received. Note: Our email
   server occasionally screens or otherwise does not deliver an email.

   Please list in your email what files/review information is attached. Note: Our email server does not always deliver attachments.

   Please limit attachments to 25 MB. For larger files you will need to use an FTP site (ex: WeTransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive,

2020 Preservation Awards Recipients

African American Historic Places 2019-2020 Addendum

Originally scheduled for April 17, 2020 and then postponed until September 25, 2020, the 2020 Historic Preservation Conference has been cancelled, given the continuing uncertainty that surrounds the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.  We appreciate the interest of our planned speakers, sponsors, and those who were planning to attend. It is our hope that we will be able to gather again in person soon. Information about future conference planning will be posted here.
