Access to National Register Files

The South Carolina National Register files are a valuable archive of information about our state’s historic places. To find a list of National Register properties by county in South Carolina follow this link.  The National Register files at the State Historic Preservation Office are available through the Research Room at the Archives and History Center. The Research Room is open Monday – Saturday, 8:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., except for state holidays. You can also request photocopies of National Register nominations by following this link to Research Queries.  Scans of the original National Register nominations are available on-line.

The Consultant’s Guide to Survey and National Register Files is intended to assist consultants using the State Historic Preservation Office files as part of studies undertaken to comply with federal and state historic preservation regulations.  It provides an overview of the information included in the SHPO files and a step-by-step checklist for searching for properties that are listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
