Preservation Awards

Each year thousands of South Carolinians work to preserve the state’s legacy that is reflected in our historic buildings, structures, and sites.  The Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation, the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor recognize exceptional accomplishments in the preservation, rehabilitation, preservation, and interpretation of our architectural and cultural heritage with annual preservation awards.

There are six categories of awards:

  • The Honor Awards celebrate successful and exemplary historic preservation projects around the Palmetto state.
  • The Governor’s Award is presented to an individual for lifetime achievements in historic preservation.  It recognizes an individual’s significant achievements or landmark efforts in support of historic preservation in South Carolina.
  • The Heritage Tourism Award recognizes those who best use South Carolina’s cultural and historic resources in the promotion and development of tourism or use tourism to directly benefit the preservation of our heritage.
  • The Corporate Stewardship Award may be presented to a corporation in recognition of significant achievements or landmark efforts in support of historic preservation in South Carolina.
  • The Elected Official Honor Award may be presented to an elected official in recognition of significant achievements or landmark efforts in support of historic preservation in South Carolina.
  • The Archaeological Stewardship Award may be presented in recognition of significant achievements or landmark efforts in support of South Carolina’s archaeological heritage.

Nomination forms are available in November of each year, and the awards are presented at the annual statewide historic preservation conference in the spring.
