South Carolina State Historic Preservation Plan

The State Historic Preservation Office has responsibility under the National Historic Preservation Act for developing, and revising as needed, a statewide historic preservation plan.  The plan guides the work of the State Historic Preservation Office, but it also provides a vision for historic preservation in the state.

Process to Revise the Plan
In the fall of 2005, we began making preparations to update the previous state plan, Investing in South Carolina's Future by Preserving Our Past, which was published in 2000.  From September through December 2005, we gathered public comments on preservation issues and priorities across South Carolina.  Follow this link to learn what you told us.

In February 2006, we brought together representatives of a range of local and state nonprofit and government organizations to discuss the public comments and develop recommendations for encouraging and supporting historic preservation in South Carolina.  During March and April, the State Historic Preservation Office staff used these recommendations to draft goals, objectives, and strategies for the revised plan.  Public comments were incorporated into the final plan published in 2007.
