Historic Preservation Grant Applications Now Available
Federal fiscal year 2009 historic preservation grants, which are administered by the State Historic Preservation Office, can assist two types of projects:

Survey and Planning Projects: Any government entity, non-profit organization, or institution may apply for these projects.  Churches and other religious organizations are also eligible to apply.  Eligible projects include surveys of historic properties, National Register nominations, and preservation planning.

Stabilization Projects: These projects must be located within cities, towns, and counties that are Certified Local Governments (CLGs).  For a list of South Carolina CLGs, see our website at /programs/localgovt/certified.htm.  A CLG may apply, or any non-profit organization or institution within the incorporated limits of a CLG may apply as long as the chief elected official signs the application.  Eligible projects include stabilizing historic buildings or structures or protecting them from the adverse effects of the weather.

A 50/50 match is required for all projects.  Grant awards generally range from $1,500 to $25,000.   Applications are available at /grants/preservationgrants/. Completed applications must be received by January 30, 2009.  For more information, contact Brad Sauls at 803-896-6172 or sauls@scdah.state.sc.us.

Town of Blythewood Is a Certified Local Government (CLG)
On September 23, 2008, the National Park Service designated the Town of Blythewood as South Carolina’s 27th CLG.  The CLG program recognizes local governments that have established a local historic preservation program that includes the identification and protection of historic properties.  At least 10% of Archives and History’s annual allocation from the National Park Service must be set aside for CLGs.   For more information about the CLG program in South Carolina visit /programs/localgovt/certified.htm or contact Jennifer Satterthwaite at jsatt@scdah.state.sc.us, 803-896-6171.

Preservation Trust of Spartanburg Receives Award

  • Horry County Cemetery Project, ($43,690):  The project will locate, inventory, and record GPS locations of each gravesite in their historic cemeteries.  This information will allow the County to create a record of where all gravesites in the County are located to assure that they will not be destroyed or sold to developers; and to provide a public resource through a searchable database of ancestors for researchers.
  • Bluffton Old Town Wayfinding Signage Project, ($105,250): The Town of Bluffton will implement the recommended sign design from the Bluffton Old Town Master Plan, install directional and informational signs, and utilize recommended improvements to the main gateway from the interstate to the historic area.
  • Historic Survey for the City of Aiken, ($20,000): The City of Aiken will conduct a survey in efforts to promote growth, preserve historic structures, pinpoint areas of concern, aid in future planning for new historic districts and designations, and for public education.
